Calcium carbonate has the structural formula CaCo3 and occurs naturally in, for example, stones or the minerals calcite and aragonite.
The best known is probably limestone as a natural calcium carbonate source. But also in the shells of marine animals, pearls, snakes and eggs, the connection occurs.
Health effect of calcium carbonate
Calcium carbonate is often prescribed to increase calcium blood levels when they are too low (hypocalcaemia). It is a relatively cheap calcium source.
Therefore, it can also be used for complaints that are due to calcium deficiency. Examples are osteoporosis, weak bones, hypoparathyroidism, a disorder characterized by parathyroid gland dysfunction and certain muscular diseases (e.g., paw position of the hand).
