Calcium carbonate has the structural formula CaCo3 and occurs naturally in, for example, stones or the minerals calcite and aragonite.

The best known is probably limestone as a natural calcium carbonate source. But also in the shells of marine animals, pearls, snakes and eggs, the connection occurs.

Health effect of calcium carbonate

Calcium carbonate is often prescribed to increase calcium blood levels when they are too low (hypocalcaemia). It is a relatively cheap calcium source.

Therefore, it can also be used for complaints that are due to calcium deficiency. Examples are osteoporosis, weak bones, hypoparathyroidism, a disorder characterized by parathyroid gland dysfunction and certain muscular diseases (e.g., paw position of the hand).

In general, calcium carbonate can also be taken as a preventive measure against calcium deficiency, for example if you can not absorb enough calcium or have an increased need for your diet for certain reasons (pregnancy, certain medications).

Calcium has many important functions in the body. Nerves, muscles and bones rely on calcium to maintain their function.

In the case of calcium deficiency, the body may begin to use the bones as a source of calcium and thereby weaken it. Calcium carbonate is also taken for heartburn and indigestion.

Calcium carbonate in heartburn

Heartburn is a symptom of reflux disease (reflux disease). About 25% of people in industrialized countries have heartburn once a month. Often comes the regurgitation of acidic gastric juice.

Agents containing calcium carbonate are often taken for the unpleasant heartburn. Calcium carbonate is very effective, as it acts as an acid blocker and thus neutralizes the excess stomach acid.

When taken on an empty stomach, it can stop the symptoms for 30-60 minutes. When taken with food, the effect can last for 2-3 hours.

However, calcium carbonate only works against the symptoms. The causes of heartburn (for example, reflux disease, irritable stomach, inflammation) must also be investigated and, if necessary, treated.

What are the risks and side effects?

The short-term intake of calcium carbonate is i.d.R. dangerous. In rare cases, it may cause bloating, bloating or constipation. If these side effects persist or worsen, stop taking them and consult a doctor if necessary.

Very rare side effects include loss of appetite, nausea, weight loss, drowsiness, difficulty concentrating or tiredness. Again: Stop taking immediately and see a doctor if necessary.

This list is not complete. If you notice any other side effects, consult a doctor.
